Based on some inspiration from Cal's fantastic blog post on Wonder Woman's new costume, there was a bit of discussion about the oversexualized women in comics (as one aspect of what keeps bringing the boys - and men - back) and I immediately thought of Dawn.
The series of different comics featuring Dawn, goddess of birth and rebirth, and her lover, Death is exactly what we describe when we talk about over-the-top eye candy. And the storylines weren't exactly the most brilliant writing in the comic world.
And in thinking about beauty and storytelling I was immediately drawn to a place I don't return nearly enough. When you take various artists and combine them with the sharp wit and brilliant writing of Niel Gaiman, you get Death, one of the Endless who pull the strings of existence.
Seriously, stare at the Dawn all you want, but if you haven't picked up the Sandman comics you are missing a true piece of literature.
...and then there's someone's take on the Little Mermaid. I have no reason or excuses.

I agree with you about 'Sandman' and most of Neil Gaiman's works. He made his 'Death' cute and sexy without tarting her up. If fact, making your character look like a slut (as with Dawn) makes her uninteresting to right from the beginning and you have to work that much harder to capture me attention. I would be interested to see 'Dawn's' or 'Lady Deaths' sale numbers
Yeah, that's why I have never been into comics or fantasy art. Too offensive to women. Lesbian or feminist comic artists are okay, but their stuff doesn't make the mainstream at all. Personally, I quite like Wonder Woman's new look although there's still too much emphasis on her tits, in my opinion.
Little Mermaid is a minx!
Cal - as would I. Good insight!
Debra - I agree. And with that in mind, I still recommend picking up the Sandman graphic novels. Delicious.
Monkey - Noms.
Boobs are all well and fine, but they really get to be a drag after a while...
Ah, Sandman. Still have all my issues bagged up somewhere. As a male pig, I sure do enjoy the boobies, but superpowered or not, no one in their right mind is going to fight the forces of darkness dressed as if they just stepped out of a Victoria's Secret catalog.
If the link works, check out RAT COMICS #3, it's my neighbor, and you can check out some of his other stuff in my blog series My Neighbor the Artist.
I kind of like a hybrid of the two styles in my comic book ladies. The 'Sin City' girls come to mind- tough as nails and gritty but still sexy as all get-out.
